In September, 1970, Hellings Elementary was opened, named after a pioneer family, Mr. & Mrs. S. Hellings who had lived in this area. Hellings Elementary school was surrounded by woods. In 1970, the school had only four pods, all rooms were used as classrooms. Classes in the two grade sevens had 39 to 41 students each and the first grade four class had 39 students.Mr. A. Backer, was the first principal and Mr. D. Neale was the first vice-principal.
