Science

Science education in British Columbia is designed to provide opportunities for students to develop scientific knowledge, skills, and attitudes that will be relevant in their everyday lives and their future careers. In addition to introducing them to current concepts, findings, and processes in various scientific disciplines - biology, physics, chemistry, astronomy, and geology - it encourages them to:

  • develop a positive attitude toward science
  • examine basic concepts, principles, laws, and theories through scientific inquiry
  • demonstrate respect for precision
  • develop awareness of assumptions in all forms of science-related communication
  • separate fundamental concepts from the less important or irrelevant
  • identify supporting or refuting information and bias
  • recognize that scientific knowledge is continually developing
  • use given criteria for evaluating evidence and sources of information actively gain knowledge
  • skills, and attitudes that provide the basis for sound and ethical problem solving and decision making
  • assess the impact of science and technology on individuals, society, and the environment
  • cultivate appreciation of the scientific endeavour and their potential to contribute to science


At the senior secondary level, a number of courses are available for students who are interested in pursuing interests in this curricular area. These include:

  • Sustainable Resources 11 & 12

Related Programs

Science Stretch is a program for elementary students Grades 4-7 and secondary students Grades 8 & 9 who demonstrate strong passion for the science and inquiry. Two groups of elementary students and one group of secondary students are selected each year for the Science Stretch program, based on the recommendation of their science teacher. Sessions are held once a month at the District Resource Centre.

Sustainable Resources 12 - Agriculture: Independent Directed Studies is a program offered in conjunction with Kwantlen Polytechnic University and the Earthwise Farm Garden. This unique program focuses on the current trends in agriculture, and the impact that agriculture can have on global development and international relations. Sustainable Resources 12 - Agriculture will look at the components of sustainable agricultural systems, agricultural commodities, and agricultural supports and challenges. Through project-based learning, and direction from program principals, students independently work on fulfilling the learning outcomes of the curriculum.
