DELTA EMPLOYMENT SKILLS PROGRAM

The Delta Employment Skills Program presents free job search workshops with a flexible schedule to accommodate individual needs. These quality workshops can not only help you find a job but prepare you to take positive, more confident steps towards your long-term career goals. The program is funded through the Canada-British Columbia Labour Market Development Agreement and is FREE for eligible participants.

WORKSHOPS OFFERED:

RÉSUMÉS AND CALLING CARDS:

  • Learn how to showcase your top skills
  • Network using a professional calling card
  • Receive one-on-one résumé consultation

INTERVIEW SKILLS:

  • Gain confidence in a mock interview
  • Learn the "sandwich" technique
  • Practice those difficult questions

LETTERS AND REFERENCES:

  • Write professional cover and "thank you" letters
  • How to ensure a positive list of references

ELECTRONIC RÉSUMÉS:

  • Make your résumé electronically "friendly"
  • Learn how to apply on-line or by email

CAREER PORTFOLIOS:

  • Discover how to create your own professional portfolio and how to use it to advantage with an employer

Note: A variety of 2-hour workshops on related job search topics will be offered from time to time, including: Overcoming Age Barriers, Job Offer Evaluation, Negotiating with Employers and Stress Management. CONSULTATIONS / USE OF RESOURCES:
Workshop participants will also be able to access individual employment counseling and support during "drop-in" weeks each month. Participants can:
- book a one-hour consultation appointment with a counsellor for interview practice and review, or career focus advice
- use computers, fax machine, copier and other resources
- receive help with revisions to résumés and cover letters, or sending emails
- access current labour market information and be provided with job leads

This support to participants is available for three months following workshop participation, or until employment is found.

WHO QUALIFIES TO PARTICIPATE IN WORKSHOPS?
Workshop participants must be:

  • unemployed or working less than an average of 20 hours per week
  • actively seeking full-time employment
  • over 19 years of age
  • able to speak English at an intermediate skill level.
