Welcome to the SDSS Soccer Academy News!Fall 2011 Newsletter

Welcome to the 2011/2012 SDSS Soccer Academy. We are off to a great start and the transition to a co-ed soccer program has been smooth. This year, for the first time, we are also pleased to welcome three international students from Germany to the academy - Luisa, Clara, and Saskia. They have been a great addition to the program.
We started the year with fitness testing and will do this once a term; scores recorded this term will be used as a benchmark for individual growth. Paul Bahia, our speed, agility, and quickness specialist, has been working with the students at least twice a week. The players have already started to show improvement in this area. It is critical for all modern day athletes to be aware of the position of their body while trying to maximize output in the given sport. From a soccer point of view, we have been mainly focusing on our first touch and the importance of body position when receiving the ball. This is crucial for any successful player and we will continue to focus on this throughout the year.
We have a very exciting and diverse cross-training program set up for the fall. Activities will included yoga, boot camp, deep water running, pilates, squash, gymnastics, kick-boxing and curling. Each cross training activity helps to develop skills transferrable to soccer, whether it be agility, quickness, footwork, flexibility, strength, balance or core training. Students will walk to activities offered at Winskill Aquatic Centre and will be transported by an academy bus to Delta Gymnastics in Ladner, South Delta Recreation Centre and Bayside Squash Club in Boundary Bay. Please check the calendar posted monthly on the Soccer Academy website http://web.deltasd.bc.ca/programs/academies/soccer-academy
for the location of each class.
Soccer Academy clothing has been ordered through Adidas and should be here soon. Each student will receive two pairs of shorts, two pairs of socks, a long sleeve training jersey, two training tops, and capris-type training pants. We encourage students to label their clothing to avoid losing items.
I'm excited about the year and have really enjoyed the effort level of the players so far. Please remember to send a note if there are any absences or injuries that I need to know about. This way we can make sure the student gets appropriate activities to do during class time. If you have any questions or concerns, please call me at the school (604 943-7407) or send me an e-mail at: sburns@deltasd.bc.ca
