Dear Parents and Guardians,

As you are aware, there is a new curriculum in British Columbia. The redesigned curriculum is the result of years of hard work on behalf of teachers and the goal is to ensure all students are prepared to reach their full potential in an interconnected and ever-changing world. This school-year marks the start of a three-year rollout of the curriculum. To support its successful implementation, there will be two additional professional development days this school-year dedicated to familiarization with the new curriculum.

The additional professional development days this school-year are:

Monday, February 22, 2016
Monday, April 18, 2016

There will be no instruction on these days. Parents are asked to make alternate arrangements for their children. These days are in addition to the professional development days already in place at your schools.

The two curriculum-focused professional development days are part of a plan to support the new curriculum announced by the Ministry of Education and the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation on September 28th.  Next school-year and the year after that will both have one additional professional development day dedicated to the new curriculum.  The three-year rollout of the new curriculum involves this year being a trial year of the grades K-9 curriculum. The 2016/2017 school-year will see full implementation of the K-9 curriculum and will be a trial year for the grades 10-12 curriculum. Finally, 2017/2018 will see full implementation of the grades 10-12 curriculum. We encourage parents to acquaint themselves with the new curriculum by visiting the Delta School District website:

It is important to note that the two extra professional development days this school-year will vary by school district. Each school district, in consultation with their local teachers’ union, determined what days work best for their schools. We do apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our families, but we are pleased that our teachers are being supported to gain the knowledge they need to best implement the new curriculum.
