Summer school underway in Delta

July 16, 2015

Summer school classes at Delta School District are underway, with a large mix of students attending from North Delta, South Delta, Surrey, Richmond and New Westminster, as well as private and International Students.

Leslie McKay has been organizing the ELL Summer School Program and International summer students for the past 20 years. "Summer school in Delta is huge," she explains. "There are 53 teachers working at 4 schools for the ELL Program alone. Our teachers are loyal - they return year after year."

Students have enrolled primarily to get ahead for the year ahead. "The kids are polite and positive. Summer school is a fun environment," she continues.

Student helper Ruth-Ann Chau, who graduated from Burnsview this June, is helping Ms. McKay along with a few other students. "Any student who works 90 hours alongside the summer school staff earns 4 credits towards graduation," explained Ms. McKay. "Students who are not attending classes but rather are helping the administrators have been getting good work experience and skill building. They are very involved in the school." Ruth-Ann has won a full scholarship to the Bejing University of Chinese Medicine, where she will attend in the fall.

Jason Malo, Principal at North Delta Secondary's summer school program, explains "At North Delta Secondary School we have 34 classes that run in the morning and 9 classes which run in the afternoon. We have 41 teachers on staff. We also have 2 hall monitors and one Education Assistant. A large portion of the staff have taught summer school multiple times in their careers. We also have a fair portion of TTOC's who are gaining valuable teaching experience."

With subjects ranging from English, Math, Science, Planning and Social Studies, classes are offered for students ranging from grades 8 to 12. The most popular course this summer at North Delta is English 12.

There are also 16 Youth Activities happening throughout the District this week for students ages 5 to 16 years old, including Mini Chef, Slam Dunk Hoops, LEGO Mining and Crafting, Cartooning Camp and iMovie.

Each week there are new classes being held for youth, teaching them a variety of skills.
