Hundreds of students gather to learn about trades

In front of more than 300 secondary school students, recentgraduate Kevin Kirk expresses his passion for a school program that he sayschanged his life. “The ACE IT program is a win-win decision,” he told hisformer peers. Kirk graduated two years ago after taking the automotive ACEIT program at Seaquam Secondary.  AcceleratedCredit Enrollment Industry Training (ACE IT) allows students to beginaccredited trades training while still in high school.

What is the Foundation Skills Assessment?The Ministry of Education, through the School Act, requires that all students in Grades 4 and 7 in B.C. take part in the Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA), an annual assessment of reading comprehension, writing and numeracy (math) skills. The assessments are based on the provincial curriculum and are developed by classroom teachers from across the province.

Clothing donations help schools prepare for emergencies

Large, red clothing donation boxes have been popping-up atDelta Schools over the past year, and they do more than provide clothing forthose in need. They are also helping to keep local students safe. Beginning in May 2010, the Delta School District emergencypreparedness committee, along with the Delta Fire Fighters’ Charitable Society,initiated a clothing drop box program to raise money for school emergencypreparedness programs. The community is encouraged to drop off old clothes,shoes and the like.

Aboriginal culture shared through second agreement in Delta

A second Aboriginal Education Enhancement Agreement (AEEA)was celebrated today in Delta with partners committing to support Aboriginalstudent success and bring a greater awareness of Aboriginal culture and historyto all students. Aboriginal Education Enhancement Agreements are a commitmentby school districts, local Aboriginal communities, and the Ministry ofEducation, to work together to support Aboriginal students. Delta’s firstagreement was signed in 2005.

Update for January 11, 2012The long range weather forecast indicates that a cold spell should be expected starting next week, bringing with it some snow. As a reminder, student safety is the first priority of the School District.  Parents/Guardians are responsible for their children's safe travel to and from school.  If, for any reason, a parent/guardian feels that a child cannot travel safely to school, then they should make other arrangements.

 A one-time resident of North Delta, BritishColumbia was recently awarded the country’s highest military aviation honour –the Air Marshall W.A. Bishop, VC, Memorial Trophy.  Captain Ryan Tyler, son of Cathey and DougTyler, was presented the honour during an award ceremony in Quebec City, Quebecthis fall. Tyler is a Canadian Forces helicopter pilot presently serving at 403Helicopter Operational Training Squadron, under 1 Wing command, at C.F.BGagetown, New Brunswick.

She oversees a wide variety ofcareer programs available for students.

Grey Cup champ urges Delta students to 'dream big'

LaRose wheeled in the Grey Cup, still cocooned in its silver travel case."The Grey Cup, oh my God!" exclaimed another.Students at the school were treated to the visit by the Grey Cup champ on Monday.PrincipalZena Ray said one of the parents, former CFL star Willy Loftus, is buddies with LaRose, and he made things happen.

Edcamp Delta marks a new way to hold conference
