Report Card Letter from the Superintendent of Schools - November 2011
Dear Parents/Guardians,
As the parent or guardian of a student in Delta School District, you are receiving this letter with the first report card of this school year. Unfortunately, this term’s report card does not contain all of the information that you have come to expect, including academic progress in specific subject areas, and information on other matters such as personal planning, physical health and effort.
The School Act requires that you receive a minimum of three written reports per year. For this reason you are being provided with the attached report indicating at minimum, the students’ division, teachers, courses and attendance. Report grades will be provided for any classes taught by Principals or Vice Principals.
You are likely aware that teachers are presently involved in a legal strike which commenced on the first day of school this year. As part of their strike action members of the BC Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) are not preparing report cards. According to the Labour Relations Board essential services order, marks for Grade 12 students will be made available for graduation, post-secondary applications and scholarship purposes, although they may not be made available through the usual report card format.
Teachers are still carrying out their normal classroom work such as planning, teaching and assessing student progress. Teachers are also communicating student progress to the students through individual feedback on assignments, tests and other indicators of overall progress.
In many cases parents will already have had the opportunity to speak with teachers or have received information from the teachers regarding their child’s progress. At a few secondary schools parents have access to Parent Connect and have used it to monitor their child’s assignments. Should you have any questions regarding your child’s progress, I encourage you to either email your child’s teacher or contact the school office to leave a message asking that the teacher contact you.
We appreciate this is a difficult situation, however, we remain committed to providing excellent learning environments for our students.
Yours truly,
Dianne Turner
