Tuition-Free Adult Literacy Classes Starting Again In December

Many adults in our community, new Canadians as well as some who were born in Canada, cannot read this website article. Delta School District's Continuing Education branch continues to offer a range of courses to improve basic reading and writing skills for adults, with free tuition, convenient scheduling options, and new classes beginning again in early December. Since 1976, the Continuing Education branch of Delta School District has provided quality literacy training to adults in Delta, and is a winner of the Canada Post Literacy Leadership Award, a national award recognizing achievement, community impact, innovation, and organizational excellence in the field of literacy education. Each semester, Delview Adult Centre in North Delta enrolls about 160 students in English Language Services for Adults (ELSA) classes with a further 300 students taking other courses at the centre. Adult Foundations courses are also taught at Delta Manor Education Centre in Ladner. In addition to Adult Foundations, tuition-free High School Completion courses are taught at various Delta locations throughout the year, including teacher-led classroom instruction, self-paced classes, and on-line courses.

“Working on language acquisition is critical for students to be able to move toward courses that they need to either complete their high school diploma or to gain access to post secondary institutions and employment opportunities,” says Alyson Caouette, District Vice Principal, Academic Programs.

If you know of someone who might benefit from English language instruction or for more information about Adult Foundations courses or High School Completion options, phone 604-594-6100 or visit http://web.deltasd.bc.ca/programs/continuing-education/course-information/adult-foundations. As well, the new Continuing Education print catalogue will be delivered with local newspapers to all homes in Delta on November 24 and 25.
