School’s IN for Summer 2010:
Over 2,750 Students Take Part in Delta Summer Learning Programs
Summer used to be a time when polished school hallways and silent gyms waited for students to return after Labour Day. In Delta schools, more and more each year, this is not the case.
Participating in a variety of programs operated by Delta School District’s Continuing Education branch, over 2,750 youth and adult students spent part of this summer actively involved in learning.
Academic programs, including 6-week full-credit secondary school courses, academic remedial courses, and ESL Summer School, attracted over 2,100 students in Summer 2010.
In addition, "Summer Quest 2010", Youth Activities camps for ages 5 through 17, attracted over 600 students this July and August.
“As usual, I am thrilled with the variety of programs we were able to offer Delta students through Summer Quest 2010,” says Youth Activities Coordinator, Ron McNeill. “A student could carve a piece of soapstone, improve their math skills, or learn to play a guitar, and still have options to do much more.”
Reflecting the diversity of interests shown by Delta children, the best-attended camps this summer dealt with study skills, cooking, French, drawing, science, babysitting, and musical theatre.
“It is more than the expertise that our instructors bring to the camps that impresses me,” says McNeill. “It is their enthusiasm that translates into a positive experience for the campers.”
