Full Day Kindergarten Registration for September 2010

The Ministry of Education is phasing in full-day kindergarten (FDK) over the course of two years. Full-day kindergarten will be available for up to half of eligible students effective September 2010 and will be available to all kindergarten students effective September 2011.

The Delta School District will be funded for full-day programming for about two-thirds of our Kindergarten students for the 2010-2011 school year.

For September 2010, the Delta School District is happy to announce full-day kindergarten will be available in 15 of the district’s 24 elementary schools. The expansion of the kindergarten program will provide more opportunities for deeper and richer exploration of the curriculum in a nurturing, play-based environment.

The following is a list of Delta schools offering full-day kindergarten classes beginning September 2010:

  • Annieville Elementary
  • Chalmers Elementary
  • Devon Gardens Elementary
  • Gibson Elementary
  • Gray Elementary
  • Heath Elementary
  • Hellings Elementary
  • Jarvis Elementary
  • McCloskey Elementary
  • Richardson Elementary
  • Pinewood Elementary
  • Hawthorne Elementary
  • Holly Elementary
  • Ladner Elementary
  • South Park Elementary (English only)

The interest in full-day Kindergarten stems from research which emphasizes the importance of the “early years,” and reveals the enormous potential for learning in children from infancy to school-age. The philosophy of the Kindergarten curriculum in B.C. is that children learn best through play, and the expanded day will continue to emphasize play-based learning.

Schools will continue to register their kindergarten classes as they have in the past. Information relating to the registration process can be found by accessing the Registration Process for the 2010/2011 School Year.
